That was great. Sir Jacob you are an excellent extemporaneous speaker.

You made a good point about Churchill and Roosevelt's early dealings with each other. People forget about that. FDR sent Averill Harriman to England to ameliorate the situation.

On a lighter note, I never thought I would see a film or a taped feed of you with a lava lamp in the background. Rock on!

Really interesting, I’m afraid I’m not particularly ‘clued in’ when it comes to all things politics but I’m interested and I enjoyed the detail of this discussion

There is a lot of nonsense spoken about the "Special relationship".I would have thought the real special relationship (if anyone exists with anyone) should be between America and France. After all Louis XVI supported America in their war of independence.Lafayette etc.Personally scratch the surface and I don't think really Americans have ever forgiven us for owning them.

The second world war was obviously futile.Ostensibly fought over Poland at the end ended up under the soviet boot.

FURTHER EVIDENCE,that democracy here is a facetious choice between Tweedle Dumm and Tweedle Dee with the Nigerian leader of the so called opposition praising Starmer.

WELL DONE Trump for pausing military aid.

I read ,yet again ,in the Spectator ,the old bore(A.K.A Charles Moore)of yet another trip to Ukraine by him and Boris, wining and dining ,whilst men die at the front. Is this where the albino Turk,Heinz 57 varieties A.K.A Boris Johnson gets his money from I wonder.Purportedly paying £4m for his moated property in cash.!!!!!

The papers in Britain today are full of Charles Windsor meeting Zelensky, aren't the papers in Britain always full of it.!!Charles is having the royal train reinstated(no doubt at our expense).Tsar Nicholas II also lived trains,he had to abdicate on one eventually.

Another stunning example of hypocricy I find is when we hear talk about Freedom of Speech ,as Starmer did recently at the white house when the whole world knows English people are being jailed for their righteous indignation at the mass invasion of this country. We are second class citizens in this country whilst the illegal Human botritus are cosseted in luxury hotels. No problems with energy bills for them or cost of living.

I subscribe to "Letters from an Englishman"not letters to America, If I want letters from America I can listen to the archives of the marvellous Alastair Cook .

We have NO dentists here as Jacob knows,he smoothed the way for an Indian to come here and praised him in the House of commons,he has now gone private and recently charged me £240 for a filling.(Jacob kindly suggested a buy a set of pliers .In line with many people in England these days). However Ukrainian "refugees"who have been given houses ,jobs etc here routinely return to their country for dental treatment .Done refugees .Read the report of one who lives in Wiltshire on the BBC.

I mean NHS dentists that is.

As I mentioned in another post recently, I met Zelensky's former personal trainer in Los Angeles. Somehow he along with his family and dogs managed to get out early. One assumes given the dogs that he flew private. And he seemed to have the money to rent a rather nice air-b-n-b. Poor Ukrainians indeed!

Glad your interview went so well with Suzy Weiss,Sir Jacob.Shame we can't read it unless we pay some schekels.Would have thought it could have been free for your devoted subscribers ?

On looking up Suzy Weiss and Bari Weiss I found an expose by one Ben Cohen, eloquently titled "Bari Weiss's Sh**ty Free Press",,talk about no honour amongst thieves,Mr Cohen obviously missed his metier in the corps diplomatique.!!!

Mr. Phillips, you clearly don't mind paying Sir Jacob's rather extortionate fee for his weekly "letter". I would suggest that you look more closely at the Free Press which includes a daily email "news of the day" with links to longer interviews, etc. and the very amusing email "TGIF" every Friday. An annual subscription is less that half the cost of Sir Jacob's publication. If you are a podcast listener, do try "Honestly". It's free.

If there was a way for you to send me your email, I would be happy to forward a few emails for you to look at.

I know nothing of Ben Cohen or his work.

I recommend that you find Bari Weiss' letter of resignation from the New York Times.

What an oxymoron that Suzy Weiss' bi line is the "Free"press.Far from it.

I subscribe to the Free Press and recommend it. They do their best to foster debate on all sides of an issue much to the dismay of those whose minds are closed to one side or another. I thought Suzy Weiss' interview with Sir Jacob was pretty stupid (on her part). I guess she was trying to be amusing. I believe that she is only employed because she is Bari's little sister.

At least Trump has started talking to Russia and Putin ,you have to .What's the alternative it just goes on otherwise .Its just a pity Putin didn't win a blitzkrieg and presented a fait accompli.Ukraine was always Russian, they even speak Russian there.Gorbachev himself was part Russian Part Ukrainian.

Isn't hypocricy amazing ,.It's like telling people to shut up and then continuing to mouth off.Foreign Office to that !!!

There has been a lot of fuss recently about America sidelining Ukraine in the talks initiated by America in Saudi Arabia.America has form on this I know for a fact.During the Rhodesian war Kissinger went to South Africa and saw Vorster and agreed with him to cut off supplies to Rhodesia.Ge then presented Ian Smith with this fait accompli.Rhodesia could ignore the whole world but NOT South Africa. When Ian Smith was forced to step down,Supplies were resumed.Cold ,ruthless exercise of America's power.A reality.Don'think for one minute they're our friends ,look at the lesson from history of Suez.

I think America is Britain's friend. That said I think we Americans are afraid of what your immigration problem has led to. Someone recently joked, only half joking, that the first nuclear armed Islamic country is going to be Britain. Think about that for a few minutes.

We have observed that your politicians, police and judiciary are terrified of being called racist or Islamophobic. If, like me, you think that most actions result from either fear or greed, let's consider the greed side of the equation. Look if you can (I don't know how easy the information is to obtain in the UK) at the amount of money Arabs have donated to British universities, political groups and individuals and their "charities". We in the US have noticed how Arabs and the Chinese have bought their way into our colleges and universities. We will make it stop. You might consider doing the same.

Interesting video. We hear a lot these days about the "Special relationship" with America. It was a term coined by Churchill.

It's never existed ,America and Americans are always out for what they can get .We've only just finished paying off the "Debt" we owe them over Churchill's war.A

war that brought this country nothing and the price of which was the destruction of our empire.

I went to a talk a few years ago at Frome given by Michael Portillo who is always worth listening to.When he was a Defence minister he said he got on well with his Russian counterparts but when the question of Ukraine cropped up ,the iron curtain came down again.(a phrase used originally by Dr Josef Goebbels NOT Churchill, incidentally,in February 1945)

Ukraine is NOT European, Ukrainian's are NOT Europeans. To have European "peacemakers" there is perpetuating the extension of NATO 's borders and the EEC's.This is what provoked Putin in the first place.

I've always enjoyed Chicken Kiev!!

Defend Ukraine ,take on Russia when we've opened our borders and can't stop the current invasion we're suffering. What a joke. The only one laughing is this Jewish clown who received another 2 5 billion from us."Laughing all the way to the bank "to coin a phrase of Liberace.

Expand full comment

Sorry? Which Jewish clown do you refer to? And if you mean the former comedian, Zelensky, if he's Jewish that might be the only good thing I've heard about him and has Britain really been conned out of GBP 25 billion? If so, think how we feel in America!

Listened to your piece a week late but, anyway, all good stuff so please do more. Meantime, a couple of interesting historical touchstones of interest in these troubled times. One is the interesting, if obviously incomplete, comparison between Woodrow Wilson’s approach to Germany, as the WW1 aggressor, at the end of that conflict & Trump’s indulgence of Putin, now. The other is the relationship between Gladstone’s extraordinary popularity as ‘the People’s William’ after his 1861 & 1862 budgets with their focus on ‘good housekeeping’ & ‘balancing the books’, & the existential need for the UK to realise the need to live within our means, starting with abandonment of Net Zero; slashing welfare & the size of the State; & a reversal of Labour’s’ war on wealth. Can we wait four years on these fronts & where is the opposition front bench in rebuilding the Conservative base from which millions have defected?
