Wow! Thank you for writing on him. I’ve never heard of him.

I did some light wikipedia reading on his son who unfortunately died at only 35 and childless. He lived an interesting life for being so young. It’s a shame that the family went extinct. It’s always good to honour your ancestors and set high expectations by living in their example. I wish there was a Monck family today in England who served in honour of him.

Excellent article, I had not appreciated on what a knife edge the restoration teetered. The General is still commemorated today in the tune Monck's March (or Monk's March, or occasionally incorrectly rendered as 'the Monks' March'). It is a popular English folk tune in both music sessions and for morris, and can be heard here:

What an incredibly deft politician. I mean that in the best sense. The discipline and discretion Monck exhibited could be a good lesson for some of our current leaders and their bustling media-crazed lieutenants. Great article!
